Valley of Flowers opened in 2014

Valley of Flowers opened in 2014 at the end of season

All the bridges and trek has been built

Valley of Flowers was finally opened to public on 4th October, 2014 after 16 months of floods on Uttarakhand. The flood washed off most of the bridges connecting Govindghat and Valley of Flowers. The first bridge was at Govindghat itself, now the PWD (Public Works Department) has constructed a huge motor able bridge. This bridge was completed by September 2nd week. You can see the picture of the bridge below.

Another important bridge was constructed inside the Valley of Flowers near Ghangaria Village. This bridge was completed by end of July, 2014. But even then the Valley of Flowers could not be opened due to the fact that the trek beyond this bridge was also washed off for about a kilometer. The trek has to be rerouted and new trek has to be constructed. The matter was stuck in senior officials of PWD and forest department.

The answer is yes, as the Valley of Flowers was opened to public for 6 days at the end of season in 2014. Finally the forest department got the budget in end of August, 2014 and the construction of new trek started in September, 2014. Local villagers were assigned the contract of construction of the trek. They worked very hard and completed the work by end of September, 2014. The forest department opened the Valley of Flowers for general public on 4th October, and 11 people entered on the first day. Valley of Flowers remained opened for 6 days and it was closed on 9th October. Following are some of the pictures of the new trek route in the Valley of Flowers. The new trek is 1km longer than the old one. You need to go higher and then come down to reach valley. Following picture taken from way to Hemkund Sahib will explain it.

How to deal with Altitude Sickness

As lack of Oxygen is very common at high altitude areas. But before it becomes severe need to know about the remedies.

Symptoms of Altitude Sickness

Symptoms of Altitude Sickness

Symptoms of altitude sickness

Drowsiness
Shortness of breath upon exertion
Nausea or vomiting
Persistent rapid pulse
Loss of appetite
Fatigue or weakness
Peripheral edema (swelling of hands, feet, and face)
Insomnia
Dizziness or light-headedness
Pins and needles

Remedies for altitude sickness

    Drink Plenty of Water

    Drink Plenty of Water

  1. You need to drink plenty of water as altitude sickness may be due to dehydration as the lungs lose high amount of water vapours at higher altitudes. If you are losing water due to perspiration then maintain a proper electrolyte balance by having some sports drinks.
  2. If you are having headache then have one litre water and take the medicine named acetaminophen (Tylenol). If your headache disappears rapidly then you are not suffering from altitude sickness its just dehydration.

  3. Acclimatizing means to get used to a specific climate. It takes some time to Acclimatize in a new climate. Here are some steps to Acclimatize fast. Well the “golden rule” for high altitude Acclimatizing is climb high and sleep low- Once you’ve made your way up past 3,000 metres (10,000 feet), do not ascend more than 300 metres (1,000 feet) per day to sleep. You can climb as high as you want, just make sure that you come back to a base camp that’s no more than 300 m (1,000′) higher than your previous night’s sleeping elevation. This is a useful guideline to keep in mind if you’re driving to a high altitude, as well.
  4. Climb High Sleep Low

  5. If you are not having the enough time for golden rule. Like if you are flying to a destination which is thousand feet above the departure site. Then you can reduce the symptoms of altitude sickness after reaching there.

Simulated altitude equipmentthat produce hypoxic (reduced oxygen) air. Portable hyperbaric chambers are especially useful if inclement weather or other factors could make the climb or drive down to base camp impossible.

  6. Acetazolamide(Diamox), medication will be very useful as it’ll reduce the recovery time to half and don’t drink alcohol and drink a plenty of water.
  7. Diamox

  8. Coca leaves can be chewed to deal with mild altitude sickness.

  10. Ginkgo Biloba is fossil tree and an inexpensive herbal supplement. You can use 120 mg per day to reduce the symptoms of altitude sickness.

  12. Gamow bag is a portable plastic pressure bag inflated with a foot pump. It can reduce the effective altitude by 5,000 feet.

  14. Take it easy. You need not to push yourself too much. Don’t try to breathe too fast and too quick. Resting at the altitude at which you became ill is often the most effective remedy for altitude sickness. You’ll usually feel better in 1-2 days.
  15. Take it Easy

  16. If you are moving in a car never look in to the valley. As you are not habitual of seeing this kind of scenes. So when you’ll look down in to the valley it’ll look very deep and if you’ll be looking into the Valley when the car is moving it can be resulted in to vomiting whenever you look in to the valley from the car.

Will Valley of Flowers open in 2014? When does Valley of Flowers open ?

Will Valley of Flowers open in 2014 ? What is the current Position of the Valley of Flowers? Is the bridge near Ghangaria constructed to enter the Valley of Flowers?

This post is necessary to answer the questions of many people who want to come to Valley of Flowers in 2014 but saw a post on Times of India. This post stated that the Valley of Flowers may not open in 2014 at all. This is very unfortunate that one of the leading news paper is writing this type of wrong news. I could not go to Valley of Flowers personally this season till date, but I sent one of my associates to click pictures of the work done by the authorities in the area. The progress is discussed as follows.

Progress of work between Govindghat and Ghangaria.

They have done a lot of work between Govindghat and Ghangaria and in fact the current trek condition is better than the condition before the floods. They have constructed new bridges at various locations. They have constructed new bridge at Govindghat and another bridge is under construction and this bridge will be motor-able. They also have constructed a new bridge at Bhyuandar Village. Another bridge is under construction at Bhyuandar village, in case the older bridge is not able to stand the river. So there are three bridges at Bhyandar now. Pictures of these bridges along with trek are given below.

Position of the Valley of Flowers? Will the Valley of Flowers open in 2014

Now the question is what is the position of the bridge which is required near Ghangaria Village to enter the valley? In fact the Times of India says that the Valley of Flowers will not open as there is no bridge. The authenticated news is that the bridge is already under construction and unfortunately the pictures of the same could not be taken by my associate. But that bridge will be constructed by June 25th as per PWD officials. Now the biggest question is about the trek after the bridge. Actually some 1.5 km trek has to be laid after the trek by forest department. As per my sources that trek will also be completed latest by July 10th, and the Valley of Flowers will be opened for general public after that.
